Event description

Description

TYC Talks Education is a dialogue that will create space for students to discuss issues in the education system that they care most about, what student voice currently looks like within their schools and how they want to see greater student voice within their schools. The dialogue open to any high school student in Toronto. We will be joined by TDSB Trustee Marit Stiles (Davenport) and TCDSB Trustee Jo-Ann Davis (Toronto-Centre) for the second half of the dialogue to discuss the importance of student voice.

The TYC Talks Education event is a part of the TYC's #StudentsofToronto campaign. Over the past few months, students have been telling us that they feel like they lack power and agency in their learning and in school. Usually, opportunities for student voice are given to students in leadership positions, and student bodies - especially marginalized and disengaged students - are not involved in shaping their education. We recommend that the Ministry of Education and Toronto school boards develop a systems-level student voice strategy that includes professional development for staff on enabling student voice in classrooms, implementing dialogue-based school and classroom student feedback systems, and targeted consultations with marginalized (including Black and Indigenous students) and disengaged students.
