Why December 6th
December 6th marks Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and commemorates the anniversary of the 1989 Ecole Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, during which an armed male student deliberately targeted and murdered fourteen women and injured ten more in the name of “fighting feminism”. Canadians reacted in shock, sorrow, and outrage.
Why is participating important?
It's Prevalent: Half of all Canadian women have experienced physical or sexual violence
It's Gendered: 92% of teens who experience dating violence are girls
It's Lethal: Every 6 days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner
More than 3,000 women a night stay in Canadian shelters to escape abuse.
Why a Yoga Class?
Yoga and similar modalities open the door to new beginnings and emotional healing. As part of our Strong With Her Campaign, YWCA Halifax wants to bring together all yoga studios and other partners in our region to recognize those lost in Montreal, provide a healing space for self-care on December 6, and raise funds to help us in our work of ending gender based violence and providing support to those affected.
Why YWCA Strong With Her?
Strong With Her is an opportunity to tell the community is time to end violence against women and give hope to those suffering from violence by providing them the knowledge they need to help make a positive change in their lives.
Your support will help fund life changing programs for women and children, including those fleeing violence.
Would you like your Yoga Studio or fitness facility to participate? Please encourage them and direct them to this website.
