An Architect/Engineer Talk & Mixer

Ticket Price: $20 Professionals, $10 Students (Includes Drink and Appetizers with Admission)

Speakers:

DAVID FUJIWARA | OAA | Principal, David Fujiwara Architect

*This event can be counted towards OAA Structured Learning ConEd hours.

About the Event:

We know that achieving zero energy buildings requires a higher collaboration between design disciplines... and what brings architects and engineers together better than beer?

Come out to this pub night to network and learn from your peers about recent experiences in designing ultra low-energy and low-emission buildings..and earn OAA ConEd hours to boot!

OAA HEADQUARTERS RETROFIT

The OAA Headquarters Architecture 2030 compliant retrofit involves the retrofit of a 22k sq.ft. award-winning office building, targeting an 85% energy use reduction, to 55Kwh/m²/year, while also updating the interiors to suit the growing needs of the owner’s organization; improving occupant comfort and indoor air quality; and renewing major components of the envelope and HVAC system. Including output from the planned PV and solar thermal collectors, the project will exceed on-site net-zero carbon and energy on a yearly basis.

David Fujiwara is the project architect; Deborah Gottesman is providing high-performance lighting design; and WSP is providing integrated design facilitation, energy modelling, mechanical, electrical, and envelope design services.

Ambitious and innovative features investigated as part of this design included assessment of passive displacement ventilation concept; Trynsys modelling of seasonal ice storage integrated with geo-exchange systems, and consideration of smart building integration, and on-site net-zero systems using PV and solar-thermal system.

About the speakers:

DAVID FUJIWARA

David Fujiwara has been an architect and sole practitioner since 1984 presently with a staff of 3 interns and technicians. He has designed houses, community health centres, office and commercial buildings, and industrial buildings. Most of his work has been renovations and additions, all projects that get built. Much of the work over the years has been energy efficient, trying to find better ways to make buildings, leading to the design of a sustainable dwelling at 546 Richmond St. W. in 1999, winner of an OAA Award for Architectural Excellence, and design of the Now House in 2006, a CMHC Award-winning Net Zero Energy retrofit project. In 2011 he undertook a curtain wall glazing and roofing retrofit project at the OAA Headquarters which lead to energy studies of the building and the eventual design of the OAA Headquarters Retrofit and Refresh, 2030 Challenge project.

CRAIG WATSON

Craig Watson is a mechanical engineer in the Buildings Group at WSP with expertise in mechanical design, including effective ventilation strategies, rainwater harvesting systems, water efficient plumbing designs, medical gases, fire protection, and building automation systems. Craig is a leader in geothermal design at WSP and is in the process of becoming a Certified Geothermal Designer (CGD). He is skilled in designing for environmental sustainability and healthy indoor environments, in addition to energy efficiency consulting.
