Aviva Chernick
Aviva Chernick is a queer Jewish artist, a white settler living in Tkaronto (Toronto). She brings the artistry of voice, story and movement to each and every offering.
Aviva is an award-winning Canadian musician who has brought her voice and creative skills to diverse musical projects including; a dozen years collaborating and touring as the lead singer of two-time Juno nominated Jaffa Road, a vocalist in solo and company performances, creating and reimagining through several projects with Soundstreams New Music Company and a company member in the ever-evolving Ward Cabaret. Dear to her heart are the years of being mentored by American National Treasure Flory Jagoda in the Balkan Judeo-Spanish repertoire, the relationship which inspired her most recent album of Judeo-Spanish folk music reimagined called La Serena.
Alongside her artistic career, Aviva leads and teaches about the voice in prayer and contemplative practice across North America and beyond. She is the founder of the Toronto based meditation community called neySHEV (since 2016).
In individual sessions, Aviva offers spiritual care and guidance for creative process. In group sessions, she facilitates freeing the voice and practices of mindfulness in song and silence.
