Creating Space Project

This Northern Hills Community Association committee has its roots in collaborative discussions initiated by the NHCA, the Calgary Northern Hills MLA’s office, United Way Calgary and Aspen Family Services. The initial discussions centred around the lack of the promised public high school and health centre (originally the North Hospital), and much needed community space and social services in the Northern Hills. As the discussions developed, other needs in the area became apparent and the Creating Space Project was born.

The Creating Space for Strength Project
In 2012, the NHCA undertook a community engagement project in collaboration with Aspen Family Services and the CCCSA, facilitated by the then MLA, Teresa Woo-Paw. It was called the Creating Space for Strength Project. A group of consultants, Eaton International, were tasked with helping us to find out what residents already had available to them, but also what they felt they most needed and would like to see in the short and long term in our communities, via community surveys and consultations. The first report was completed and presented in 2013.

The Present & Future

Since 2014, the committee and the NHCA have been working on community-led projects by partnering with external organizations like Vivo, the North Central Family Support Program, the Parks Foundation Calgary, Thrive Calgary, Foothills PCN and City of Calgary Parks to bring social supports (Outreach Tuesdays, Parentlink Outreach, Joy of Christmas, Social Enterprise/Northern Hills Connect) and community solutions (Harvest Hills Hub project, Creating Coventry, Health In Season Community Garden Workshops) to the Northern Hills residents.
