Dr. Smita Pakhale, Bridge Engagement Centre

Bridge Engagement Centre (the Bridge), our community space downtown Ottawa, where we conduct projects in a true partnership with the target population (homeless, at-risk for homelessness, low income), and co-create solutions with a holistic approach. Our model is demonstrating impressive results. Most people who followed in our project, though were provided with support on tobacco dependence alone, not only reduced or quit tobacco use, but also reduced or quit all other drug use. More than 30% improved their general socioeconomic status (found a new job, a better place to live, a pet, family reunions, school and drug rehab enrollments etc.). This model has been appreciated by Univ. of San Francisco, Toronto and Chicago and are considering adapting it to their homeless population. The Bridge collaborates with community partners partners namely, The Ottawa Mission, Oasis, Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS, Strategy, Somerset Community Health Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association, Ottawa Branch, Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, Toronto, Ottawa Inner City health Inc., Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre, Toronto, Somali Centre for Family Services and McGill University, University of San Francisco, California, University of Chicago and University of Toronto.
