Personalized Dementia Solutions Inc.

Karen Tyrell, CDP, CPCA is a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) and a Certified Professional Consultant on Aging (CPCA) with a passion for creating harmony between individuals with dementia and their caregivers.  She is the owner of the company Personalized Dementia Solutions.

She began her journey in 1995 by providing therapeutic recreation activities to seniors in residential/long-term care.  In this role she enhances quality of life for individuals with dementia with dignity and respect while making them smile and feel safe.

While doing a placement as part of her schooling in the mid 90's, she observed many inappropriate care practices and approaches towards the residents on the dementia care unit; opposite from what she had been learning in class. She attributes these disturbing experiences to the reason why her passion ignited.

Over the years, Karen continued to find ways to support those affected by dementia. While working in Ontario as an Executive Director for the Alzheimer Society in her community, she worked tirelessly to enhance community services for both the caregivers and their loved ones.

Karen not only supports families through her company, Personalized Dementia Solutions, she also has been providing education and support to family caregivers in the Tri-Cities, BC since 2012 through a United Way of the Lower Mainland funded program, which is also supported by the Dogwood Pavilion.

Recently she has been co-delivering the valuable 7 hour dementia training known as GPA - Gentle Persuasive Approaches developed by the Advanced Gerontological Education Inc. to front-line care workers in residential/long-term care homes.

Karen continues to provide talks and workshops relating to dementia; including speaking on her book, "Cracking the Dementia Code - Creative Solutions to Cope with Changed Behaviours" to a variety of organizations/groups.  She also volunteers her time to various support roles in the community.
