Can I receive an in-person Bridge Building Presentation in my classroom?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We will be accommodating in-person sessions this year based on availability on a first-come first-serve basis. When purchasing your kit, select "class visit" as an add-on. If we are able to attend your class we will email you directly. We are also holding an in-person event Feb 21st at SC.

What comes in a Bridge Kit?

Accepted Answer

The bridge kit consists of eight (8) sticks of balsa wood. All other building materials (i.e. glue, cutting instruments, etc) are not supplied.

How are bridges scored?

Accepted Answer

Bridges are scored based on a load-to-weight ratio. This means the bridge that holds the most weight will not necessarily win as we are looking for efficiency. Just like real-world engineering and architecture, material efficiency is essential!

Do I need to include all the information requested on the registration sheet?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We will only be contacting students who win a prize that provide ALL the requested information on the registration form.

Question 5

What is the best type of glue to use on our bridges?

Accepted Answer

Standard wood glue. Using super glue, hot glue, white glue, or gorilla glue is not recommended.

Question 6

Is there a schedule of testing for the day of the event?

Accepted Answer

Due to the unknown number of bridges submitted, we are unable to provide a timetable of the event. The competition testing order will be Gr 4/5, Gr. 6-8, Highschool, and lastly the Open category. Generally, it takes about 30 seconds to test each bridge.

When do we find out our assigned Bridge Number?

Our volunteers work late into the evening the night of bridge registration (March 6th) and the final entry list will be provided to teachers before the end of the day Thursday March 7th.

Question 8

Will all my classes bridges be tested at the same time?

Accepted Answer

This is not guaranteed. Given the large number of bridges submitted on registration day, it is very possible the bridges will be mixed in transport to the registration room.
