Event description

Description

In Canadian news and information media, mens' voices still outnumber women's voices 2 to 1. There is also a growing body of research showing that the media often treats women differently than men. At Women & Politics, we think an effective way to minimize these double standards and barriers is to provide women with media training with a gendered lens. We invite women-identified community leaders to come and participate in our media training workshop, facilitated by Shari Graydon of Informed Opinions.

About the Media Workshop:

This workshop provides practical tools to enhance participants’ capacity to turn media
interview requests into education or advocacy opportunities, helping them to become more
effective at crafting and delivering their key messages. Learning outcomes include:
• Understanding the contexts in which reporters, columnists and talk show hosts operate;
• Preparing for interviews (print/broadcast, friendly/hostile, long/short, live/taped);
• Crafting concise, quotable and memorable messages;
• Bridging from asked questions to important issues and more nuanced context;
• Translating abstract issues into compelling stories and accessible analogies.

About the mock interviews (max 3 participants for each of 2 sessions):

For the 1-on-1 mock interview session, Shari will conduct one or two brief recorded interviews with each of the participants on a topic of their choosing. She will then offer specific feed on the taped exchanged, reinforcing effective approaches and suggesting alternative responsives as relevant. Participants will benefit not only from their own practice and review, but also from witnessing the others in the group and hearing their feedback.

There are two sessions available, each with a maximum of 3 particpants: 1-2pm and 2-3pm.

Please note that in order to attend the mock interview portion of the day, you must also attend the morning workshop.
