Workshop Description:

This course is designed for trained EMDR therapists with an interest in learning how to adapt their EMDR practice and strengthen their skillset when working with Indigenous First Nations people. Participants will gain insights and aha moments as to why and how we start to adapt the EMDR Standard protocol supporting a decolonizing lens. There will be a live demo with a prior recorded demo along with opportunity for questions.

Learning Objectives:

  • State the importance of adapting colonizing practices to support an environment of decolonization.
  • Identify the importance of adapting History and Treatment Planning to be culturally inclusive with the client; How to ask questions that will determine what the therapist needs to know to determine if EMDR is a good fit for the client.
  • Design a treatment plan which integrates EMD, EMDr, EMDR and Indigenous First Nation approaches.
  • Explain EMDR Standard Protocol from an Indigenous First Nation Lens.
  • Cite one modified culturally specific BLS technique known as “Eagle Wings Flapping”.
  • Create a peaceful calm place using an Indigenous Narrative perspective.
  • Create a RDI resource development installation from a cultural lens.
  • Identify how to adapt Phase 2 EMDR containers using art therapy.
  • Explain when to adapt phases 3 to 8 of standard protocol.
  • Recite common negative and positive cognitions.
  • Formulate culturally appropriate cognitive interweaves that incorporate. aspects of Indigenous worldviews that are relevant to healing.
  • Utilize at least two interventions to complete a session with supporting grounding and ongoing stabilization.

Agenda if Joining Live

9:00 am – Opening greetings

9:30 to 10:15 am - Articulate the importance of adapting colonizing practices to support an environment of decolonization:

Identify the importance of adapting History and Treatment Planning to be culturally inclusive with the client; How to ask questions that will determine what the therapist needs to know to determine if EMDR is a good fit for the client. Assessing and addressing dissociation from a cultural lens.

10:15 am – Break to 10:30 am

10:30 to 11:15 am – Continue treatment plans and explain Standard EMDR from an Indigenous First Nation Lens. Design a treatment plan which integrates EMD, EMDr, EMDR and Indigenous First Nation approaches.

11:15 to 12 pm - Creating resource development & installation (RDI) from a cultural lens.

12:00 – 12:45 pm – Lunch break

12:45 to 1 pm - Questions from morning session.

1 to 1:30 pm - Introducing EMDR Standard Protocol from an Indigenous First Nation Lens. How to adapt phases 3 to 8 of standard protocol.

1:30 to 1:45 pm – Identify how to adapt Phase 2 EMDR container using art therapy with a video demo of installation.

1:45 to 2 pm - Explain how to modify the BLS for Indigenous First Nations known as “Eagle Wings Flapping”.

2 pm to 2:30 pm – Video demonstration of explaining EMDR and Eagle Wings Flapping with Peaceful Place.

2:30 to 2:45 pm – Break

2:45 to 3:15 pm – Phases 3 to closure with Standard EMDR protocol adapted to support Indigenous First Nation Clients. Discussion of closing a session with grounding and stabilization techniques.

3:15 to 3:45 pm – Discussion of culturally appropriate cognitions and cognitive interweaves that incorporate aspects of Indigenous worldviews that are relevant to healing.

3:45 to 4 pm - Closing questions.

Your Presenter

Shelley Spear Chief is a Clinical Social Worker who specializes in trauma and is a Leading First Nation Presenter on issues of historical trauma and utilizing traditional practices in counselling. She integrates her cultural ways of understanding and working with First Nation clients who have experienced trauma.

Shelley has presented at the EMDR Canada conference as well as with Dr. Bruce Perry at the 2018 NMT International Symposium on Trauma. Shelley is currently in the process of writing a book on working with Indigenous peoples in collaboration with Dr. Sandra Paulsen. In addition, Shelley has presented many different workshops and training within several First Nation Communities teaching several topics related to trauma and dissociation. Shelley has taught within the University of Calgary social work program.

It is the participant’s responsibility to check with their individual state boards/regulatory body to verify CE requirements for their license to practice.

Attendance is automatically tracked through your Zoom login. If you are not present for the entire duration of the live broadcast or if you are watching the Home Study/recorded version of this workshop, you will need to complete a quiz with a pass of at least 75%.

EMDRIA - 5.5 CEs

1) EMDRIA has reviewed and approved the content of this workshop for 5.5 EMDRIA CEs. Although the focus of this presentation will not be on the use of EMDR strategies, it will focus on providing strategies to enhance your EMDR practice.

2) A separate EMDRIA only certificate will be awarded by Envision to those who qualify after course completion. This EMDRIA only certificate is for submission to EMDRIA. The other Continuing Education certificate is for submission to your licensing board at renewal.

3) Number of CEs may vary for those who watch only the recording.
