Description

Overview

Hosted by Alberta Environment and Parks, Environmental Monitoring and Science Division, in collaboration with the Miistakis Institute, this two-day workshop will be a gathering place to learn about best practices in the field of citizen science as well as identify priority actions to advance the practice in Alberta. Participants will have an opportunity to network with others who are interested in and/or actively doing this work. Citizen science is based on classical science. Citizen science projects are collaborative efforts between professional scientists and citizens from diverse communities, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

The workshop objectives are to:

  • Provide an opportunity for knowledge exchange and co-learning between practitioners, experts and resource managers on the value and benefits of place-based citizen science in understanding environmental change.

  • Highlight best practices in collection of credible, relevant environmental data and information produced through citizen science.

  • Assess needs for tools and methods to support collection of credible, relevant environmental data and information.

Who should attend?

Practitioners, researchers, environmental managers, decision and policy makers, project coordinators are invited to attend this event (space will be limited).

The workshop is for those wanting to further their knowledge of what citizen science is; how to develop, implement, and evaluate citizen science initiatives; and how to enhance linkages between citizen collected data and decision making.
