AI for Embedded Prototyping: Tools, Techniques, and Takeaways
Overview
Abstract
AI-accelerated workflows are reshaping how engineers prototype with modern development kits, embedded firmware, and application software. This talk examines practical methods for using AI tools to streamline hardware selection, firmware generation, driver development, and rapid iteration across heterogeneous platforms. We’ll cover case studies demonstrating faster bring-up, improved debugging, and automated code synthesis, along with the limitations and failure modes engineers should watch for. Attendees will leave with actionable techniques for integrating AI into their embedded and software prototyping pipelines.
Bio
As CTO of Barnacle Systems, a rapidly growing Victoria-based hardware company, Darren Beckwith leads engineering teams developing innovative solutions for recreational, industrial, and government marine sectors. Under his technical leadership, the company has launched six new hardware products over the past five years, demonstrating his ability to translate marine industry needs into successful products.
Darren's commitment to advancing marine electronics extends beyond his corporate role. He has served 15 years on Camosun College's Electrical and Mechanical Program Advisory Boards, helping shape the next generation of marine technology professionals. His expertise in IoT and embedded systems—areas critical to modern marine electronics—is regularly shared through guest lectures and teaching circuit analysis courses.
When not advancing marine technology, Darren enjoys mountain biking, volunteering with youth sports, and umpiring—activities that reflect his commitment to craftsmanship, mentorship, and fair play.
