Welcome to the Annual Medieval Conference

Re-creating the Middle Ages

Hear ye, hear ye! Save the date!

This year we are celebrating and reflecting on the Middle Ages. Join us for a day of recreation and re-creation, bringing together falconry, different kinds of medievalism, medieval-style technologies, clothing, art and literature. We will have opportunities to have some hands-on experience with calligraphy, embroidery, book binding and more. Engage with other passionate medievalists, learn a skill and celebrate the day with us!

The event will be anchored by our Lansdowne speaker, Dr. Andrea Myers Achi (Metropolitan Museum of Art), who will be speaking about the legacy of Byzantium, the long-lasting medieval empire.

Price includes fees and taxes as well as two breaks with coffee and tea.

This is a full day of both talks and the opportunity to try some hands-on experiences.

We will have lectures on ale making, music and musical instruments, birds of prey, as well as our invited Lansdowne speaker Dr. Andrea Myers Achi.

Hands-on experiences will include calligraphy, book binding, embroidery, manuscript viewing and more.

We are also excited to announce that there will be 2 tours right here in Victoria on the Friday before and the Sunday afterwards. These two tours are free, but require a separate registration as space is limited. Both will be hosted by our Medieval Studies instructor, Dr. Michael Reed.

On Friday, Feb 6th we will have a tour of the Church of Our Lord, Pioneer Square, and Christchurch Cathedral. We will be walking from one location to the next.

On Sunday, Feb 8th we will have a tour of the Ross Bay Cemetary.

Both tours will start at 11:00 am.

The tours are weather dependant, and may conclude earlier if weather is poor.

Please register for the tours here.

Note for registration options:

If you are unable to attend for the whole day, prefer to attend online, or you are interested in only a few talks, please feel free to reach out to us by email (events.medi@uvic.ca) and donate. You can donate when you arrive on the Saturday, or online. We welcome everyone to attend however best suits their schedule.

This conference is open to everyone. If you are under 19, please register here. Parents, if your child is under 12, you will need to accompany them.

We ask everyone who plans to attend to register or reach out to us directly so that we can ensure we have adequate coffee/tea and snacks during the breaks as well as enough materials for the hands on portion of the event.
