Halifax Summer Opera Festival returns with ARMIDE, a clash of cultures, a battle between men and women & a struggle between love and hate.

    About this event

Just before W.A. Mozart changed music forever, there was the French genius Christoph Willibald Gluck, Marie Antoinette's favourite composer. She attended the premiere of his opera Armide in 1777 in Paris. The music is gorgeous, notable for its psychological depth and the intense atmosphere it creates.

The tale, based on a segment from Torquato Tasso’s sixteenth-century poem, Jerusalem Delivered, sees Armide (ruler of Damascus) set out to enchant her sworn enemy, Renaud, who has not only defied capture but set all his fellow Christian knights free. In rendering Renaud helpless, Armide falls in love with him, setting up an epic struggle between her, her feelings and the dark spirits she has summoned to destroy him.

The Halifax Summer Opera Festival invites you to join our cast of young, talented singers as we bring this opera to life: fully-staged and costumed and accompanied by a small ensemble under the direction of Melissa Doiron. Stage direction by Nina Scott-Stoddart and David Mosey, Accompanist Giancarlo Scalia. Vocal coach Maureen Batt. Costumes Andrew Pelrine.

Sung in French, with projected English translations.

August 11-14, all performances at 7:30 pm, except for Sunday the 14th at 2 pm.
