Beyond Mindfulness: Becoming a Work of Art

An Evening Dharma talk

Have you ever felt that the inner work you do is unappreciated? More often, our culture values and recognizes the beauties of the external world. In fact, the inner work is the art of making ourselves into works of art – unique masterpieces of bliss, wisdom, and radiant compassion.

Gain the inspiration and tools you need to let your raw talent shine, in this talk by master artists of the inner world.

What is the talk about?

Join Doug and Catherine Senseis to explore six aspects of consciousness that have been refined by the Buddhist practitioners for more than two thousand years. These six aspects are called the Paramis (perfections) in Sanskrit, and they are the blueprint to becoming your own inner and outer work of art.

Are the Paramis Relevant Today?

Every meditative practice in our tradition, at some point, leads back to these Paramis, also known as “The Six Perfections”. They offer a flawless path that carries us straight to spiritual enlightenment.

It’s a simple, beautiful, and powerful path that offers a refuge in these busy, information-heavy times.

Is this for you?

This class is for you if you’re looking for simple tools to transform challenging states and to train your mind to be brighter, lighter, and more joyful.

The Dharma Hub will be offering follow up sessions in the coming weeks and months, where you’ll also have the opportunity continue your understanding of the Paramis.

*Please arrive 10-15 minutes early as class will start promptly at 7pm.

About the Teachers

Achariya Doug Duncan has been teaching the Buddhist path to awakening for over three decades. Known for his direct and compassionate engagement with students, Doug embraces the full spectrum of the various traditions he employs in order to mentor beings to a more awakened state. His great sense of humour, caring attitude and sometimes very direct involvement makes him an effective catalyst for opening the shadow, for very practical application of the teachings, for humorous and gentle relief when tensions mount and through a diverse range of explorations expands the teachings to include all aspects of life.

Catherine Pawasarat began her spiritual practices in earnest in her early 20s, when she struggled to make sense of personal suffering and international environmental and social justice challenges. She has trained daily with Achariya Doug Duncan since 1998 in an intensive spiritual apprenticeship that is rare in the modern West. Since the early 2000s Catherine has provided dharma training and taught the path of awakening to hundreds of students, together with Doug and on her own. In addition to Buddhist philosophy and its applications to daily life, Catherine also draws on generative living (a.k.a. sustainability) and the arts. With Doug she is co-founder of Clear Sky Retreat Center in the BC Rockies and Planet Dharma, and a lineage holder for these teachings.

Registration

Basic registration for the evening talk involves 1) offering Dāna for the teachers and 2) an admin fee to help cover the costs of hostingthe teachers in Calgary.

1) Dāna for Doug & Catherine

The teachings are offered by the teachers as a form of Dāna (traditional generosity giving) and likewise, attendees are asked to reciprocate generously to the teachers.

Two dana options: There will be a Dāna bowl as you enter the venue for you to give your offering by cash or check. You can also give dana online during the registration process.

More information on dana here: Dāna Guidelines and Practice.

2) Admin Fees

There is also an Administration Fee for the talk. This goes to help cover organiser costs of the space and for bringing the teachers to Calgary, including their transportation here and food and accommodation during their stay.

‘Beyond Mindfulness’ Urban Retreat

One of the most overlooked aspects of spiritual development is making time to fully reap the wisdom or insights from our practice, study, or explorations.

With this in mind, to give participants in the July 5th “Beyond Mindfulness” teachings a chance to put into practice the material from the class, we’ve designed a ½-day urban retreat. The time will be divided into various guided meditation sessions to help us get the most out of the experience. This will be suitable for you whether you’re new to meditation or a practitioner with many hours under your belt.

Our Calgary team has a wealth of experience in running extended retreats at centres here and abroad, as well as shorter retreats here in the city. We are excited to be able to offer this container for your spiritual work here in Calgary.

The urban retreat will take place in Capitol Hill in NW Calgary from 9am to 3pm on July 20th, 2019. (Location details will be sent to registrants closer to the day.)

The admin fee to join will be $50. Book before June 28 through this July 5 event to take advantage of early bird pricing.

Questions? You can ask us at any of our classes, through Facebook, or by email.
