Biodiversity in West Lincoln

Join the West Lincoln Green Team as we explore different topics related to biodiversity.

In January join Loretta Shields of the Smithville Garden Club and the West Lincoln Green Team for this hands-on workshop where you will learn the magic of Winter Sowing and why it’s important to add native plants to your yard or garden.

Participants are asked to bring an empty and clean plastic vinegar jug or large clear plastic juice jug or pop bottle. All other materials – including seeds – provided. Suitable for children over 10 who are accompanied by an adult. Registration required.

February will teach you how to spot alien invasives: Our native creatures need native plants but so much that is being grown is not from this area. In some cases, these plants are out-competing our native species making it difficult for our native wildlife to survive.

This presentation will help you to spot invasive plants in our gardens and garden centers, and provide you with suggestions about what to plant instead. Registration required.

In March we’ll be looking at how to be a biodiversity hero: You don’t need a big yard or a big budget to be a biodiversity hero. Your backyard, balcony or window box could become a haven for native species. All it takes is some time and attention and you can help add biodiversity to the environment.

Learn why it’s important to recognize and rid your property of invasive species, how to choose plants that add diversity and health, and how to join your neighbours and friends in spreading the word.
