The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia University is delighted to invite to the following book launch:

In 2017-1018, images of Iranian women protesting the Islamic government by taking off their headscarves in public were seen around the world. Shaparak Shajarizadeh was one of these women. In 2018, she photographed herself in front of one of the busiest squares of Teheran, hoisting her hijab overhead on a stick for all to see. This same picture is now on the cover of a new book titled “La liberté n’est pas un crime” in which she and journalist Rima Elkouri tell her story of how she became an activist fighting for women’s rights and how she came to participate in the #WhiteWednesday movement. She also recounts her arrests, her time in prison and finally her flight from Iran. Today, she has found refuge in Toronto but she continues to fight for women’s rights and basic freedoms.

In this unique bilingual event, Shaparak Shajarizadeh and Rima Elkouri will discuss Shaparak’s decision to stand up to the Iranian government, the role of women in protest movements in Iran, her decision to flee her country and to continue her activism in Canada.

En 2017-2018, des photos de femmes iraniennes retirant leur hijab en public en révolte contre le gouvernement iranien ont fait le tour du monde. Shaparak Shajarizadeh était l’une de ces femmes. En 2018, elle s’est photographiée devant un des grands carrefours de Téhéran, brandissant son voile au bout d’un bâton. Cette photo figure sur la couverture d’un nouveau livre intitulé « La liberté n’est pas un crime » dans lequel Shaparak et la journaliste et chroniqueuse Rima Elkouri racontent pourquoi elle a décidé de se battre pour le droit des femmes et de participer au mouvement des Mercredis blancs. Le livre raconte aussi l’arrestation de la jeune activiste, son séjour en prison et sa fuite d’Iran. Aujourd’hui, Shaparak a trouvé refuge à Toronto mais continue de se battre pour le droit et les libertés des femmes.

Lors de cet événement virtuel et bilingue, Rima Elkouri et Shaparak Shajarizadeh parleront de la décision de Shaparak de se tenir debout face au gouvernement ranien, du rôle des femmes dans les mouvements de protestation en Iran, de sa décision de fuir le pays et de continuer son militantisme au Canada.
