CineZeit: Vor der Morgenröte /Farewell to Europe
Overview
Film biography of the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig (*1881), which primarily focuses on the period from 1934 onwards. Zweig is at the height of his success when he is driven into exile by the Nazi takeover. But neither in Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires nor in New York or Petrópolis does he find peace. No matter how hospitably he is received in his places of refuge, and no matter how enchanted he is by the tropical nature of Brazil, he finds little peace and a new home abroad. He misses Europe, the destruction of which by war he nonetheless anticipates.
With "Farewell to Europe", Maria Schrader has created a compelling and subtly highly topical film on the theme of "exile," which also reflects a piece of European cultural history. With Josef Hader, the director has found a brilliant lead actor.
