The Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Reserve (BLBR) is located within the traditional territories of the Mi’kmaq First Nations. The BLBR comprises an inland sea and its watershed (3,600km2 total area), located in the centre of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. The geographical, ecological and cultural diversity of the biosphere provides a spectacular, immersive experience for all who go there.

From June 18-21, members of CBRA, the Indigenous Circle for Biosphere Reserves in Canada (Indigenous Circle), other special guests and engaged citizens will gather in the BLBR for four days of meetings. The first day will be dedicated to a meeting of CBRA and Indigenous Circle members, hosted in the community of Membertou in the tribal district of Unama’ki. The following three days will be dedicated to a Climate Change Adaptation Forum in Baddeck in the heart of Cape Breton Island (Unama’ki) on the shores of the Bras d’Or Lake. The goals of the Forum will be to identify existing and potential adaptations to Climate Change in Canada's UNESCO biosphere reserves, and to produce Climate Change Adaptation Guidelines as a resource for use in communities across Canada.

PLEASE NOTE: The Climate Change Adaptation Forum starts on Wednesday, June 19th in Baddeck and Wagmatcook. Registration is open to the public. For more details on this forum, please scroll down to CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION FORUM INFORMATION.

CBRA Summer Gathering Meetings in Membertou.

All registered guests will be transported by bus to the Inverary Resort for Check-In and thence to Beinn Bhreagh Hall. This magnificent structure was completed in 1893 as the summer home for Alexander Graham Bell and his family. Located on a point of land with a splendid view of the Bras d’Or Lake, Bell personally supervised its building, surrounded by just-as-thoughtfully designed landscape. Bell made Baddeck and Beinn Bhreagh his summer retreat for thirty years beginning in 1885. It was his base for a diverse range of experiments from aeronautics to agriculture, and for a rich and satisfying family life.

CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION FORUM – INTRODUCTION - Draft Program

How to adapt to the reality of climate change will be the question for representatives of Canada’s eighteen UNESCO Biosphere Regions and other guests when they meet in Baddeck and Wagmatcook, Cape Breton. Hosts for the three-day Forum are the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Region Association (BLBRA), and the Bras d’Or Collaborative Environmental Planning Initiative (CEPI).

Ways to function successfully in the face of climate change are developing gradually. This Forum will begin with examples of such adaptation from Canada’s UNESCO biosphere reserves. They will be joined by examples from diverse knowledge holders. The idea is to gain a comprehensive view of climate change adaptation strategies in place throughout the world. The gathering of one hundred participants will produce a set of Climate Change Adaptations Guidelines to be published and applied within Canada's biosphere reserves and, ideally, in a wide range of communities beyond these model regions.

All of the Canadian biosphere reserves are located within the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples. As part of their welcome to Unama’ki, Forum participants will join the celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day on Friday June 21.

Registration costs for this forum are $205.00 whether you are a CBRA representative or member of the public.

Everyone must arrange their own accommodations.
