Online event

Overview

An overview of the core concepts, drivers, and strategies in climate adaptation—designed to build foundational understanding.

About
The Capital Regional District (CRD), with support from Shift Collaborative and Pinna Sustainability, is launching a new capacity-building initiative to support local governments, First Nations, and regional partners in advancing climate adaptation and resilience. This program is designed to build foundational knowledge, foster collaboration, and strengthen applied skills through three distinct training opportunities. Each offering is tailored to meet participants where they are in their adaptation journey—whether just beginning or actively leading change.

Description

A practical introduction to climate adaptation for elected officials who are newer to this work. This interactive session builds a shared foundation: what adaptation is, why it matters now, the region’s climate risks, and the costs of inaction. Participants will leave with a clearer sense of roles and responsibilities across jurisdictions, and how adaptation connects to their own decisions and plans.

Objectives

1. Understand what climate adaptation is, why it matters now, and how it differs from mitigation and disaster risk reduction.

2. Become familiar with key regional climate risks and projections.

3. Appreciate the costs of inaction and gain perspective on how to build the case for adaptation in organizational decisions and resource allocation.

4. Recognize how adaptation must address equity, rights, and relationships and explore practical frameworks and approaches, including Indigenous approaches, nature-based, and low-carbon solutions.

5. Clarify the roles and responsibilities of different actors in advancing adaptation
