Crushing it with Konnyaku

Konnyaku powder has been used in Japan for centuries to coat paper, especially for use in making kamiko paper clothing. Washi treated with prepared konnyaku paste is called momigami (kneaded paper) or kyoseishi (strong paper). Paper is made stronger, more flexible and abrasion-resistant than untreated paper. Konnyaku-treated washi may be crumpled and kneaded, or left smooth, making it useful for a wide variety of creative applications.

In this workshop you will:

• learn how to mix konnyaku
• learn how to apply it to various weights and types of washi
• learn different methods for drying treated paper
• see examples of completed konnyaku-treated projects
• be inspired for how to use it in your own work

All supplies and materials will be provided. Participants may want to bring a notebook and pen.
