Overview

A workshop of an original sapphic pirate musical. Love fiercely, live freely, regret nothing. (Come in your most piratical outfits!)

Welcome to the debut of Cutlass the musical! This production will be semi-staged and feature a selection of pieces from the show. Cutlass will ultimately be a full length musical with twenty-two songs and orchestral accompaniment, but for now, we're trying out ten pieces for violin, cello, and piano. A "workshop" is the first step on the road to Broadway!

Cutlass follows the criminal career and love story of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two (REAL) female pirates during the golden age of piracy. The two were infamous for their brutality and fearlessness, defying every 18th century convention of femininity. Though we can't know for sure, there is a good chance that the two also engaged in a romantic relationship with each other. Very little details are known for certain about their story, but the legacy of empowerment for queer women and gender non-conforming people lives on more than 300 years later.

25% of the proceeds will be donated to Watermelon Sisters, a Chicago-based woman-led organization providing humanitarian aid in Gaza. Please consider donating to them on top of your ticket purchase. Thank you❤️
