Overview

This introduction to the intersection between child welfare and immigration is designed for foster caregivers across Ontario.

This is a two-day virtual training: Monday, February 9 & Tuesday February 10, 2026 from 9:30am to 12:30pm (a total of 6 hours of training).

The Child Welfare Immigration Centre of Excellence (CWICE) has developed a knowledge base training surrounding the intersection of child welfare practice and unresolved immigration, settlement, and border-related issues. This training was designed for foster caregivers working in child welfare to bring awareness, build knowledge capacity in practice, and promote achieving equitable outcomes for all children and youth in out of home care.

This training focuses on the different types of immigration status that exist in Canada, the impact of accessing services, and the importance of early intervention when dealing with unresolved immigration status or a lack of identity documents to prove status in Canada. Foster caregivers will learn the role of CWICE including recommended approaches, the importance of building networks and supporting Unaccompanied and Separated Children in out of home care.
