DeAnne Smith & Acquaintances! Tender comedy for tough times.
Overview
Born during 2020 Covid, when you needed to laugh and comedians needed to eat, DS&A keeps going because it's grown into a really fun, really sweet community. This show's a win-win for everyone; we donate a portion of each month's proceeds to a different cool ass organization. So far, we've supported: National Black Food and Justice Alliance, Indigenous Environmental Network, DTES Response, Dream Defenders, a NYC comedian's hospital bills, Black Lives Matter Canada's Black Mutual Aid Fund, The Okra Project, Red Canary Song, the Desai Foundation's COVID-19 Relief Fund, Trans Lifeline, Trans Santa, and MECA, Middle East Children's Alliance, among many others. The show starts at 6:00PM PT/9:00PM ET and lasts about 75 minutes.
Who's DeAnne Smith? Well, not only are they the humble person writing this bio, they're an international comedy sensation. (Okay, "sensation" might be pushing it.) But their video “Straight Men Step Up Your Game” has been viewed over 47 million times, and if they look familiar to you, it's probably because your high school friend posted it in their Facebook feed. DeAnne's critically-acclaimed Netflix special, Gentleman Elf, is available right this minute as part of the groundbreaking Comedians of the World series. They've performed everywhere from Iceland to New Zealand, and is a regular at both the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Montreal's prestigious, invite-only Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. Time Out Melbourne says DeAnne "blends smart and silly subjects with expert conviction" and the UK Telegraph says they're "Very funny. Effortless charm lets them get away with murder." They've never actually murdered anyone, however, unlike the current and every former U.S. administration. Oops, ended on a bit of a down note there. Anyway, DeAnne's great (they're working on positive self talk) and this show will be a lot of fun!
Who's everyone else? A rotating cast of DeAnne's friends and mere acquaintances! Past acts include Naomi Ekperigin, Andy Kindler, Judah Friedlander, River Butcher, Myq Kaplan, Josh Gondelman, Danielle Perez, Robby Hoffman...and so many more, but that's pretty good for DeAnne (hi, it's me!) just rattling names off the top of their/my head.
Other things:
Tickets are limited, so get on it!
Your ticket gets you access to the Zoom chat, which I'm assuming you already know how to use. Please make sure to download Zoom ahead of time (or do it 4 seconds before the show starts, as I probably would, because you love living on the edge!). You're welcome to keep your mic on so we can hear you laugh, but in that case, pop in headphones to prevent feedback! Keep your video on so we can see you! Or don't! It's your house, not to mention your whole own life, and you can do what you want. Never forget that.
You'll get a Zoom link emailed to you when you buy a ticket. You can't share it, so don't even try, you sneaky sneak. If more than one person tries to use it, both people will be locked out of the show and we'll all feel a little sadder because of it. We need more joy right now, not sadness and tech issues and attempted cyber stealing. (Plus the show is PWYC, so someone could presumably chuck in $0 and get their own link.)
DISCLAIMER:
I'm using Zoom’s platform, a platform I don't control. (I mean, what do any of us REALLY control?) If Zoom effs up, you can take it up with them, but not me. Yeah? We're all doing the god damn best we can here.
Heads up: the show will be recorded, and when you buy a ticket, you give the comedians irrevocable permission to utilize the footage and your likeness as contained therein, in any way, throughout the universe in perpetuity (ooo sounds scary and official and vast; and you're right, I did copy-paste it from somewhere) , so long as the context is not changed to alter the meaning of the original interaction, or to imply an endorsement of any kind. You are welcome to keep your camera off if you prefer not to be seen, but you're very cute, so like, why wouldn't you want to be seen. All this said, it's likelier than not we won't use the recording for anything, and we'll all just live in the god damn moment for once in our lives. *edited to add: I haven't used the recordings for ANYTHING these many months later, except watching my own self back with a critical but loving eye to make sure I'm rocking the heck out of your screens!*
