About Dr. Monique Simair (BSc'04, PhD'09)

Monique Simair is a PhD biogeochemist by training. After graduating to an economy with few jobs and too many graduates, Monique decided to create jobs by founding her first company, Contango Strategies, in 2010. She sold Contango to a publicly traded company eight years later.

In 2019, Monique founded her second company, Maven Water & Environment, a deep-tech company based in Saskatoon. The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce named Maven the 2022 Business of the Year, and also awarded Maven the Growth and Expansion Award. She exited Maven to an engineering firm in 2025.

Monique was named the 2021 Eco Impact Winner by Eco Canada. Profit and Chatelaine magazines have profiled her as a top entrepreneurial leader. She was the youngest member appointed to Canada's Science, Technology and Innovation Council. Monique has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Saskatchewan and Clemson University. She now mentors entrepreneurs and scientists, and serves on a number of boards and committees.

Her work has helped shift mining and resource development toward more sustainable practices across Canada. Monique lives in Saskatoon and stays involved in the community through board work, mentoring other entrepreneurs, and making science understandable and useful outside of labs and journals. She believes good ideas and innovation can come from anywhere, especially on the Prairies.
