Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Come join us and hone your programming skills during a day of Coderetreat! The event is free with lunch and refreshments provided. Update: Lunch will be wraps from Remedy Cafe, with vegan and vegatarian options available!

We will be using Conway's Game of Life in order to perform a couple coding exercises. Don't worry if you're not familiar with the game itself, as the main goal of a Coderetreat is to learn how to write better code given a set of constraints. No matter if you're just starting out as a software developer or you've been doing it for awhile, you will always learn something new and come out of Coderetreat a better developer.

Note: For those who came here from the coderetreat.org Events page, we are holding this event a week after the official day of Coderetreat due to scheduling conflicts.

FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is plentiful around the area. According to Impark, the underground parking lot directly below Scotia Place offers flat-rate weekend parking for $3 between 6AM - 6PM. In addition, the LRT runs directly below Scotia Tower: just get off at Central Station, follow the pedway signs to Scotia Place, and make your way up!

What must I bring into the event?

Please bring a laptop set up with your favourite code editor of choice. Ideally, you should have an environment ready for running unit tests in an object-oriented language. We do not prescribe any specific language as the Coderetreat is about tackling problems first and foremost. Don't worry about bringing food and drinks as those will be provided to all attendees free of charge!

How does a Coderetreat work?

We begin with a quick overview on some of the basic concepts of Coderetreat and Conway's Game of Life. After that, we begin with our first code exercise! Attendees will be paired up, and each exercise will last 45 minutes, followed by a 15 minute retrospective, and then a 5-10 minute break in between exercises. After an exercise is complete, you must delete your code and start fresh for the next exercise.

Wait, delete my code and start fresh?

Yup! The point of Coderetreat is not to complete an implementation of Conway's Game of Life, but rather to improve your software development skills and work with the constraints that may or may not be given to you before or during an exercise. Each exercise provides you with an opportunity to have fun, try new things, and see what works best for you and your programming buddy.
