Farm Tax & Financial Literacy (Online)
Overview
Are you a farmer with questions about taxes or finances for your farm business? Are you a landholder wondering about the tax implications of leasing land? Come get your questions answered!
Blake Lechkobit (farmer and Manager of Agriculture & Business Advisory at MNP Accounting) will share some basic knowledge about farm tax and financial literacy, then open the floor for questions and discussion. Pascale Schittecatte-Ćirić (B.C. Land Matching Program (BCLMP) Manager) will also be there to share her insights, having worked with farmers and landholders on a wide variety of land use agreements through the BCLMP. Together, Blake and Pascale offer a wealth of knowledge, so bring all your farm tax and finance questions, and let's chat!
Some examples of topics that may be covered:
- What tax implications should farmers and landholders consider before sharing land?
- What do farmers need to know about before filing their business taxes for the first time?
- What is farm roll-over tax, and how does it impact future plans for inheritance or transfer of your land?
- ... and much more!
All are welcome to join the conversation, although this webinar may be most useful to farmers that are in the early years of operating their farm businesses, and landholders looking to lease land. This webinar will not be focused on basic business planning - if you are are looking for support with your initial farm business planning, check out the Business Bootcamp for New Farmers, or our other farm business resources. Free business planning support is also available for land seekers participating in the B.C. Land Matching Program.

ABOUT BLAKE:
Blake Lechkobit is the Manager of Agriculture & Business Advisory at MNP Accounting, and is based on his family farm in Falkland, BC. Prior to working with MNP, he worked at BMO as their Senior Relationship Manager in Agriculture for the Okanagan and Northern regions.
Blake understands the challenges of farming, succession, tax and finance through first-hand experience. With a background in business start-up, Blake came to the farming world through his wife, Samantha: he married into her family dairy farm and supported them to scale the business into a commercial operation. Ultimately, the dairy operation was sold, but Blake, Samantha, and their two children now run a mixed operation on 80 acres, complete with 399 layers, 1,500 broilers, 50 hogs, and 30 cow/calf pairs! Blake is excited to be able to apply his first-hand and professional experience to his role at MNP, where he can focus on advising agricultural businesses.
ABOUT PASCALE:
Originally from Gabriola Island, Pascale spent her earliest years climbing hay bales and feeding bottle calves on Somerset Farm. After many years spent living in cities large and small, Pascale found her way back to farming through food and wine. She worked for five years as a winemaker and farm hand in the UK and the Okanagan before initially joining the YA team as a Land Matcher in the Okanagan-Thompson. Now as program manager of the BCLMP, Pascale enjoys supporting Land Matchers throughout the province in their vital work. What Pascale most loves about working in land access is connecting with people and supporting them to realise their farming goals.
