Code of Conduct
Introduction
Out on the Ice strives to address systemic barriers to participation in sport of marginalized
people, particularly those in the LGBTQ2S+ community, by creating a casual and social
curling environment where diversity and inclusion are celebrated. By publishing a code of
conduct, we have set the minimum standards by which members of Out on the Ice will be
held to.
Out on the Ice is committed to these principles and to holding ourselves and our members
accountable to promoting diversity and inclusion, on and off the ice.
By participating in Out on the Ice, you are committing to uphold these values and to
contribute to an environment that is welcoming, respectful, and safe for everyone
Values
1. Respect and Inclusion
● Treat all participants, volunteers, staff, and spectators with respect, and embrace
differences in gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, age, ability,
religion, socioeconomic status, or any other characteristic.
● Use inclusive and respectful language at all times. Misgendering, slurs, or
derogatory language will not be tolerated.
● Acknowledge and respect people’s identities, pronouns, and lived experiences.
2. Safe & Welcoming Environment
● Foster an environment where everyone feels safe and free from harassment,
bullying, intimidation, or discrimination.
● Physical, verbal, or emotional abuse in any form is strictly prohibited.
● Report any experiences (or witness of experiences) of behaviour that violates this
Code in a timely and respectful manner to the league convenor.
3. Fair Play & Spirit of the Game
● Promote fairness, integrity, and fun in all games and interactions.
● Celebrate all levels of ability and participation; Out on the Ice is a casual and social
league where enjoyment is prioritized over competition.
● Be gracious in both victory and defeat.
4. Accountability & Learning
● Acknowledge mistakes happen and approach any perceptions of error with grace
and in good faith.
● Be open to accepting feedback and learning when your words or actions have
impacted others.
● Be open-minded when providing feedback to others, and encourage an atmosphere
of education and learning.
● Recognize that intent does not override impact; apologize when appropriate and
commit to growth and improved behaviour.
● Take responsibility for upholding a respectful and inclusive space.
5. Community Focus
● Represent Out on the Ice positively in the host club and within the broader
community.
● Support fellow members and actively contribute to a culture of inclusion, kindness,
and mutual respect.
● Build a space where marginalized voices are centred and uplifted.
Reporting Mechanisms
Out on the Ice takes violations of this code seriously and commits to thoroughly
investigating any reports of misconduct. Any experience or witness of misconduct
should be reported to the league convenor immediately.
Every effort will be made to ensure privacy in the reporting and investigation process,
but confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.
Violations of this Code
Reported violations will be investigated by Out on the Ice leadership, the league
convenor, and/or other representatives of the Host Club.
The investigative process will include:
● Interviews with other members of the league who may have experienced or
witnessed the reported or similar behaviour.
● Obtaining statements from any other potential witnesses.
● Any other investigative measure as deemed appropriate by Out on the Ice in
collaboration with the Host Club.
Consequences of the violation(s) will be determined on a case-by-case basis by Out on
the Ice, and will consider the harms caused, potential for education and reparations,
and previous conduct of the impacted member(s). Out on the Ice commits to handling
each case with care, discretion, and fairness.
Consequences will range in severity and will be imposed at the discretion of Out on the
Ice; these may include documented warnings, removal from events, temporary
suspension of league and/or club membership, and permanent removal of league
and/or club membership.
Continuous Improvement
Out on the Ice commits to reviewing this code on an annual basis, and to updating our
values, mission and code to remain relevant to our members and the communities we
aim to support.
