“From Abstract Ideals to Everyday Essentials: Making the Invisible Visible"

By DC Office of Equity Diversity & Inclusion

Overview

This year UN Human Rights Day theme urges us to reaffirm human rights as essential in times of global uncertainty and growing insecurity.

This year, the United Nations’ theme for Human Rights Day, “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” calls us to reaffirm the values of human rights in a time of turbulence and unpredictability, where many feel a growing sense of insecurity, disaffection, and alienation. The campaign seeks to re-engage people with human rights by recognizing them as the everyday essentials that shape our lives and challenging perspectives that frame human rights as abstract ideals.

Our event, “From Abstract Ideals to Everyday Essentials: Making the Invisible Visible,” reflects this vision. We will bring together thought leaders, advocates, and employees with lived experience to explore how institutions can better recognize and include those who are often rendered invisible in the implementation of human rights frameworks. Through dialogue and art-based reflection, we aim to inspire actionable strategies for equity and inclusion
