Function Keys Conference of New Technology and Digital Culture is pleased to present a Moog Werkstatt workshop, facilitated by Todd Murray.
This two session workshop is open to anyone with an interest in creating music with a synthesizer. A technical or formal music knowledge is not required, nor is experience with electronics, piano or keyboards. Whether you are interested in buying your first synthesizer, or you just wanted to know more about synthesizers, you will find this workshop valuable.
Morning Session ($10/PWYC)
Each topic will include demonstrations using a large modular, desktop digital & hybrid synths or all-in-one analog synths. The morning session will focus on the topics of:

The world synthesizers: Discussions on the differences between analog, digital and hybrid synths and the use of “The patch”.

The synth voice: Monophonic and polyphonic synthesizers and how many notes a synth can play at the same time.

Extended effects: Glide, arpeggiators, sequencers, pitch wheels and slides.

Connectivity 1: Controlling your synth with CV, MIDI, MPE & Polyphonic after-touch.

Connectivity 2: Connecting your synth to external sequencers, clocks, Ableton Live (DAW), keyboards and other synths.

Open discussion with Q & A.

Optional Afternoon Session ($350*):
The afternoon session will be devoted to assembling your own (yes to take home) Moog Werkstatt desktop synthesizer. No prior knowledge of electronics, nor special tools or soldering is required.
- Assembling your Werkstatt.
- Discussions on using, patching and the care of your Werkstatt.
- Concepts from the morning session will be demonstrated on the Werkstatt.
- Open discussion with Q & A.

Instructor Bio:
Todd Murray (aka SixbySeven.ca) is a Hamilton, Ontario resident and has been involved with art and photography for over 30 years. He has been a past president of the Hamilton Camera Club and is one of the founding members of the Studio 12 Artistic Photographers Collective on James St. N. Todd has assisted artist and studios with various arts & tech projects and is available for workshops on using technology for artistic endeavors including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, electronics, robotics and synthesizers. Currently, Todd is working with several synthesizer initiatives, including education and outreach with the Hamilton Synth-Social group and several other initiatives for the online DIY community.
Todd’s work experience spans 40+ years, and has mostly been confined to the technical & engineering roles within various industrial sectors. His distant experience is rich with electrical and mechanical design experience while the last 20 years has focused on computer software, embedded systems, and systems management. Todd’s employers have been diverse, and range from research, aerospace & healthcare, through manufacturing & higher education.
Todd’s earliest ventures into music synthesizers were in 1978, and building his own analog synthesizer. Todd holds a college technology diploma in mechanical engineering, with certificates in mechanical systems, robotics, electronics, microcircuits, and computer design. He has a Canadian university honors B.Sc. degree in computer science and artificial intelligence, and a Canadian university graduate M.Sc. degree in Information Systems management. Todd also has certificates in business management, leadership and adult education.
