Gen AI and Academic & Research Integrity
Overview
Generative artificial intelligence, including emerging agentic AI systems, is influencing research, teaching, learning, and assessment design.
The McMaster Guidelines on the Use of Generative AI in Teaching and Learning offer a starting point for educators to understand and respond to generative AI in teaching and learning, including how to think about academic integrity and student use of AI tools. In addition, the Provisional Guidelines on the Use of Generative AI in Research outline considerations for responsible and ethical use of generative AI in research contexts.
Together with the Academic Integrity Policy and the Research Integrity Policy, these resources set expectations and procedures for addressing academic and research integrity concerns. In this online workshop, we will consider how these expectations intersect with decisions about course structure, assessment purpose, and the use of generative AI.
Outcomes:
- Discuss the capabilities and limitations of generative AI and explore their implications for assessment purpose, student learning, and responsible use.
- Provide an overview of the Academic Integrity Policy and the Research Integrity Policy. Discuss scope and process, and how to approach instances of suspected academic and research misconduct as it relates to the use of Generative AI.
Presenters:
Kimberly Mason, Manager, Office of Academic and Research Integrity
Stephanie Verkoeyen, Special Advisor, Generative AI.
