Join Edmonton’s emergency management community for the 10th annual Get Ready in the Park event at William Hawrelak Park on Saturday, May 13. This year’s theme is ‘Shelter-in-Place.’
Get Ready in the Park is a free, one-day, outdoor, family-oriented emergency preparedness event to showcase Edmonton’s emergency management community and promote community resiliency through personal preparedness. Edmontonians can learn more on how to take care of themselves and their loved ones for at least a week during a major emergency.
The City of Edmonton’s Fire Rescue Services organizes the event, bringing together more than 50 exhibits from municipal, provincial, federal, corporate and non-profit organizations.
- Learn how to keep your loved ones and pets safe for at least a week.
- Learn more about crime prevention and community safety.
- Find out about food safety tips during power outages.
- See real-life search and rescue dogs in action.
- Find out what’s underground so you can dig safely.
- Find out how quick and easy it is to create and practice a fire escape plan with your kids.
- Learn how to prevent flooding at home.
- Ride the CN Little Obie train.
- Encourage your kids to collect 10 stamps on their “Passport to Preparedness” to be eligible to enter to win emergency-response themed prizes.

Emergency Preparedness Week
Since 1996, Public Safety Canada has coordinated an annual national event encouraging Canadians to be prepared for emergencies in their community. This national event is called Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs the first full week in May each year.
In 2017, Emergency Preparedness Week:
- Runs from May 7 - 13.
- Promotes some simple steps for Canadians to become personally prepared and self-sufficient for a period of up to 72 hours (3 days) during an emergency.

About the Office of Emergency Management
The Office of Emergency Management, part of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, helps to strengthen and support the City of Edmonton’s resiliency in all phases of emergency management – mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
We perform our role by:
- Ensuring the City of Edmonton is prepared for and can respond to all hazards including natural disasters, technological and human-caused incidents and emergencies.
- Training City staff and local partners on the Incident Command System (ICS) and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
- Promoting personal emergency preparedness to the community.

FAQs
1. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Park 'n' Ride will be available to William Hawrelak Park from University of Alberta Transit Centre and Windsor Car Parkade. Shuttles run about every 20 minutes throughout the event. A full schedule will be posted to our Facebook page.
2. What food options are available?
There will be several Food Trucks on site. Cash machines are NOT on site though so you may want to bring some money with you.
3. Do I need a ticket?
No. This is a free event. Tickets are NOT required. Just come on down and check out the event.
