Guns, Germs and Steel (North York Reading Group)
Overview
Welcome to North York Reading Group! The group is established with the purpose to facilitate discussion on readings about society, history, environment, humanity and philosophy.
In this book, environmental historian Jared Diamond tries to explore the answer to the grand question: why are the white people dominating the modern society but not the black people? This question then leads to a journey through the entire history of homo sapiens, covering almost every corner of the world. In order to understand which group of people gain an upper hand in the competition, we need to revisit the human history, but also the environmental factors predating the beginning of all civilizations.
This is a single session with first half hour giving a brief introduction to the book, and then discuss any comment / question / insight related to the ideas raised in the book. This will be a relaxed one and a half hour session without any prerequisite to join.
