Event description

Description

Toast the opening of the Festival with a lively discussion of the future of Can Lit with Nick Mount, author of Arrival, and Michael Hingston and Natalie Olsen, co-founders of Hingston & Olsen Publishing, who are rewriting the rules of artisanal self-publishing. The Alberta-based duo will be launching the 2017 edition of their hotly anticipated Short Story Advent Calendar, whose fans include Margaret Atwood and Patton Oswalt.

Arrival: The Story of CanLit (Nick Mount)

In the mid-twentieth century, Canadian literature transformed from a largely ignored trickle of books into an enormous cultural phenomenon that produced Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje, Mordecai Richler, and so many others. In Arrival, acclaimed writer and critic Nick Mount answers the question: what caused the CanLit Boom?

Short Story Advent Calendar (Michael Hingston and Natalie Olsen)

A twist on the traditional Advent calendar box of chocolates, Hingston & Olsen Publishing’s Short Story Advent Calendar combines 24 short stories into one attractive package to brighten and enlighten any reader’s December. Previous contributors to the calendar include Daniel Handler, Sheila Heti, Jess Walter, Aimee Bender and many more.
