Do I need any experience?

Nope! For this gnome making workshop, no prior experience is needed. We’ll go through the basics together, and the workshop is designed for complete beginners.

How long is the workshop?

The session lasts 4 hours max for the Gnome cookie jar. We've found this is adequate for most people, but if you're new to clay, or you tend to take your time with projects - you might want to book for a timeslot where you can stay for a little extra time.

Question 3

Will the Ceramic Gnome Cookie Jar holders be glazed?

Accepted Answer

The building/making session is 4 hours. Some people may find they have time to underglaze their gnomes during this time. Others may need to come back a second time during open studio hours at their leisure, within two weeks to a month after to glaze. Dates will be provided at sign up.

What will I take home?

Accepted Answer

You will take home a fully glazed (coloured and glossy) Ceramic Gnome Cookie Jar holder. This means that the clay goes through two firings: one bisque firing and one glaze firing. If you have questions about how this works, please feel free to send an email to steph.jonsson@gmail.com.

Does the second (glazing) session cost extra?

No! All materials, clay, use of tools and firings (2) are included in the workshop cost.

When does registration close?

Accepted Answer

Registration closes 4 days before the event date so we have enough time to prepare everything for the workshop.

Question 7

What should I wear or bring?

Accepted Answer

Just yourself and comfy clothes you don’t mind getting a bit full of clay! Glazes do not come out in the wash. Don't wear your best clothing! If you have long finger nails, it may be difficult to make your cookie jar, you may consider trimming them, but we'll also have tools for that.

Can I bring snacks or drinks?

Yes! You can bring snacks and drinks, but please no alcohol because this is not a licensed event. If you're hosting a full on Christmas party and want to bring a lot of snacks, please email me at steph.jonsson@gmail.com so that we can prepare for allergies and a snack table.

Is the space accessible?

Accepted Answer

The space features 6 hairdresser-style swivel seats with no arms rated for 400+ pounds and backs on them that go up and down with a lever. While I want to do my best to have accessibility at the forefront, there are two long staircases up to the studio, so it is not ideal for mobility issues.

What's included?

All materials are provided — clay, glazes, firings (2), and tools. Just bring yourself and your creativity!

Can kids join?

Accepted Answer

This workshop is designed for adults (age 18+). The studio has no accessible washrooms that are easy to get to without a key, and the building has character and was built in 1911. It is not an ideal space for kids.

What if my design is very detailed or complicated?

All of the gnomes have the same basic shapes. To help you finish within the workshop time, we’ll provide advice on adjusting your design so it’s achievable in one session. Due to the nature of clay, you can't get more building time, but you can email your design to steph.jonsson@gmail.com first.
