Workshop Description:
This workshop will offer an overview of clinical assessment strategies for dissociation and dissociative disorders. We will examine the different symptoms that are labeled dissociative and what questions to ask to explore with the client their dissociative experiences. In addition, specific strategies for assessing dissociative disorders will be offered. Measurement instruments will be briefly discussed, but the focus will be on clinical interview skills.
In the second half of the workshop we will discuss how to conceptualize a case, providing the therapist a meta-view of how the dissociative client is organized, and opening a path toward a rational, coherent treatment plan. We will explore how to assess specific prognostic factors and set collaborative and reasonable therapeutic goals. Participants will learn how to focus on process-oriented approaches that are directed toward addressing and changing the client’s defensive and dissociative organization.
Learning Objectives:
- List differences between dissociative amnesia and failures to encode: distinguishing between different types of memory problems
- Describe Schneiderian symptoms indicating lack of voluntary control, including hearing voices
- Name at least 5 questions to ask for assessing dissociative disorders
- List at least 5 indicators of prognosis and treatment trajectory that impact treatment planning
- Describe how we clients organize their experiences internally
- Create a treatment plan for a client with a dissociative disorder, based on clinical assessment of dissociation, defenses, resistance and other prognostic factors.
