How To Find Your Story with Jason Filiatrault

How To Find Your Story with Jason Filiatrault

By Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers

Overview

Taught by an award winning filmmaker, come learn the basics on how to take your idea, break it into beats, and outline your screenplay.

Ideas are easy, but sometimes it’s hard to take them and create an engaging story. In this workshop you’ll learn how to take that idea and break it into story beats, how to avoid common roadblocks, and how to write a great outline for your screenplay.

Jason Filiatrault lives in Calgary but is a nomad at heart. His past credits include writing and producing on the Vancouver-shot Netflix series The Order, the award-winning feature Entanglement, and the upcoming comedy/thriller All Night Wrong (starring Zach Cherry from Severance and Oscar Nominee Maria Bakalova). Jason is also the 2025 recipient of the Robert Bertrand Award for Comedic Genius, was nominated for both Best Director and Best Screenwriter at the 2025 AMPIA Awards, and he won Best Feature Screenplay from the Writers Guild of Canada.

This event is sponsored by the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers. CSIF was founded in 1978 by a collective of twelve filmmakers who saw the growing need for film resources and film equipment on the traditional Treaty 7 territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), also known as Calgary, Alberta. Now over 40 years later we are an integral part of the growing cultural community in Calgary and are excited about new collaborations and opportunities.
