Event Information
Description
Just two weeks after In The Name Of Your Daughter took audiences by storm at sold-out screenings at the Raindance Film Festival in London, England, this heartwarming and hopeful documentary comes to Ottawa!
In this unmissable film about some of the most courageous girls in the world, Tanzanian girls as young as eight, stand up for their human rights. The film gives a voice, for the first time, to girls whose voices haven’t been heard in thousands of years. See the trailer!
In The Name Of Your Daughter tells the story of girls like Rosie Makore, 11, who had to make the toughest choice of her young life: submit to female genital mutilation and child marriage, or risk her life and run away from home. And it’s the story of human rights advocate Rhobi Samwelly, who confronts her community and protects the girls in her Safe House in Northern Tanzania.
Audiences have called the film “powerful,” “inspiring,” and even “life-changing.”
In London, reviewers said “This is a powerful and beautiful melange of heartbreak, bravery and HOPE. A magnificent film of extreme importance created from a place of love.”
The film won “Best Canadian Feature Documentary in Edmonton in May, 2018, and the Jury Prize for best documentary in Los Angeles just two weeks ago.
Rhobi and award-winning Vancouver filmmaker Giselle Portenier will be at this Ottawa screening to answer your questions and give insights on this topical issue.
The film is destined to have a pivotal role in the movement to end FGM, especially among youth.
You will be deeply touched – and inspired – by the children’s voices you will hear in this production.
