About this event

You’re invited!

VIU, in partnership with CBC Radio, invites you to join us at the seventh annual Indigenous Speakers Series featuring investigative journalist Connie Walker, from the Okanese First Nation in Saskatchewan. Walker is the host of Stolen: The Search for Jermain, a new podcast with Gimlet Media about the disappearance of Jermain Charlo and the ongoing crisis of violence facing Indigenous women and girls. A CBC journalist for 20 years, Walker previously hosted the CBC News award-winning podcast Missing & Murdered. Season one concentrated on the unsolved murder of Alberta Williams in 1989 along the Highway of Tears in BC. Season two, Finding Cleo, focused on finding the truth behind the life and death of Cleopatra Nicotine Semaganis, a Cree child who was removed from her family as part of the Sixties Scoop. Walker is currently investigating a story about the St. Michael's residential school in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan.

The event will be moderated by Nahlah Ayed, host of CBC Radio’s Ideas.

Doors open at 6 pm, event starts promptly at 6:30 pm. If you are joining us at the theatre, please have your vaccine passport and photo ID ready, as we are required to collect proof of vaccination for entry into the event. Masks must be worn indoors. Appetizers available in the lobby after the show.
