Overview

Develop person-centered strategies to support people in assessing their options and identifying next steps

Join us for a half-day of Informed Decision Making training, on Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 8:30am to 12:00pm noon EST. This is a fully online via Zoom workshop.

This is facilitated by the Self-Management program of Southeast Ontario, hosted by Kingston Community Health Centres. Due to funding, we can only accept Ontario residents.

Informed decision making is a way to engage patients, clients, and peers in their own care by working in partnership with them to identify the best course of action. It involves supporting people to consider the potential benefits and risks associated with their options, while factoring in their values and preferences. Training focuses on a conceptual understanding and structured approach to informed decision-making conversations.

This workshop is designed for front line clinicians who are involved in diagnostic or treatment decisions, and it focuses on skills needed to create successful partnerships that support patients in making decisions consistent with their desire to be involved and the values that influence that decision. The practical skills taught in this workshop are using ask-offer-ask to give information and advice and using the BRAIN worksheet to support informed decision making.

You will learn how to:

  • State the values involved in informed decision making.
  • Define person and family-centred care.
  • Define informed and shared decision making.
  • Describe the Spirit of MI and ways to express it.
  • Demonstrate ask-offer-ask.
  • Describe an approach to informed decision making.
  • Demonstrate using the BRAIN worksheet.
  • Consider the application of BRAIN to decisions made by those living at risk.
  • Demonstrate using skills with a decision aide.
  • Apply skills to practice.
