Intro to Governance Workshop
Overview
Join us for the second annual Virtual Joint Workshop, hosted by WCE Calgary & WCE Vancouver. This WCE member workshop serves as an introduction to governance for women engineers at all career stages. The virtual format replicates our popular in-person workshops, allowing you to participate from the comfort of your home, office, or anywhere in the world!
Ever wondered if you could contribute to your organization, profession, or community through board service? Boards across Canada are seeking intelligent, motivated, dedicated directors—yet women, individuals from marginalized groups, and young people remain under-represented in the boardrooms where vital decisions are made.
Leading this workshop is Shona McGlashan (https://www.mcglashan.ca/about) (she/they), the principal at McGlashan Consulting Inc. (https://www.mcglashan.ca/) Shona is an award-winning senior leader with over 25 years of experience guiding governance, public affairs, diversity & inclusion, and workplace wellbeing functions across both sides of the Atlantic.
The session will explore why you might consider adding board service to your career and community involvement goals—and will provide practical tips on how to get started.
We’ll cover the following topics:
• What you need to know about governance
• Why get involved in governance? What’s in it for you?
• Where you can make governance impact
• A toolkit for board search and outreach
• Preparing for board recruitment conversations
• How to make an impact as a board director from day one.
No advance reading or preparation is required. Expect an interactive session and be ready to share your insights, questions, and thoughts.
When: Wednesday, January 21, 2026. 11:30AM PST / 12:30PM MST
Where: Virtual via Zoom
