Overview

Introduction into understanding neurodivergence & executive functioning while developing practical supports to translate to home and school.

Executive functioning refers to the brain-based skills we use to manage daily life—such as starting tasks, staying focused, organizing materials, remembering steps, managing time, shifting between activities, controlling impulses, and regulating emotions. When these skills are lagging or inconsistent, children, teens, and young adults may appear unmotivated, forgetful, disorganized, “stuck,” or easily overwhelmed—often creating stress at home and at school, and getting in the way of social and academic success.

Parents play a critical role because when we understand challenges through a neurodiversity-affirming and skills-based lens, it becomes easier to respond with clarity, consistency, and compassion.

This workshop offers an accessible, strengths-based overview of neurodivergence and executive functioning, with practical, evidence-informed guidance for parents.

Who it’s for: Parents and caregivers of children, teens, or young adults who struggle with organization, focus, follow-through, time management, motivation, or emotional regulation—including those who identify as neurodivergent (e.g., ADHD, giftedness, learning differences, autism traits) or who are simply “not thriving” with current expectations.

This workshop will address:

  • The basics of neurodivergence & executive functioning - what these terms mean, how executive skills develop, and how challenges can show up day-to-day
  • Introduction to parent-based supports that can strengthen skills over time - simple scaffolding tools like routines, reminders, step-by-step plans, and environment tweaks that support follow-through
  • Your role and how best to help - supportive communication and co-regulation strategies, realistic expectations, and guidance on next steps/additional supports if needed
