Event description
Join us for an exciting hands-on 5 day/4 night photography workshop retreat in beautiful Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada.

About this event

Jasper in June with Mark Jinks Photography and Monika Deviat Photography

Join us in Jasper National Park next June as the park jumps to life with newfound colour and warmth. Historically, the first couple weeks of June is a changing of the seasons in the mountain parks. The last of the winter ice has melted off the lakes, revealing pristine lakes with jaw-dropping reflections. Wildlife is in abundance with elk, moose, & bear sightings common, including newborn offspring. Waterfalls are at their highest flow for the season with the mountain runoff, and alpine wildflowers start to bloom. Jasper in June is one of the best locations and months for shooting in the Rockies, and it falls just before the massive Summer crowds start to appear.

During this 5 day/4 night workshop you will learn how to compose, shoot and deliver top-notch images that you will be proud of. The workshop is limited to just 10 participants to ensure everyone receives hands-on guidance from the workshop instructors. The instructors will guide you through their processes, from preparation to execution in the field. Master concepts such as focus stacking, long exposure through the proper use of neutral density filters, bracketing, metering a scene correctly, and much more!

We will visit a vast array of locations in the area that are very well known to your workshop instructors from years of experience in the area. In order to get the best light for our scenes, we will be taking full advantage of sunrise and sunset golden hour. Sunset will be just after 10 pm, (the final light usually disappears just before midnight), and sunrise is at 530am. Blue hours are stunning in the Rockies and our shoots will extend into the night when the stars come out. The days are very long in Northern Alberta and twilight remains through most of the night, but it is still possible to view the moon and stars. So prepare to have some short nights at your hotel, don't worry - you will definitely have some free time during the day to catch up on rest. You will also have the option to skip out on a sunrise if you want to get some extra rest.

What Is Involved:

We will meet up at Becker's Chalets on the afternoon of June 5th, for an introduction and some guidelines of what to expect during the workshop. Full itineraries and a questionnaire to determine how best we can help you develop your photography skills will be emailed to participants a month before the workshop begins.

Participants should have some knowledge of their camera before the workshop as this will be catered more towards a location tour and mastering advanced concepts than learning camera basics.

Wildlife - If we have a chance to view wildlife safely without disturbing it, or disrupting traffic, then we shall, but the main focus of this workshop will be landscape photography. You will have some free time during the day to catch up on rest, do some shopping, or go exploring on your own for a few hours.

We will be staying at the beautiful Becker's Chalets, just south of the Jasper townsite. This idyllic location situated along the Athabasca River is the perfect home base for all of the locations we will be visiting in Jasper National Park.

We will be staying in large shared chalets with individual private rooms with double beds.

Contact us if you're traveling with a spouse/partner that is not a photographer (and won't be participating in the workshop), but if they are a photographer, two tickets will still be required. A discount may be possible for a photographer couple depending on room availability.

What to Bring:

  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera with removable lenses
  • A variety of lenses, wide-angle and telephoto (preferably 24mm or wider for full-frame, 16mm or wider for crop cameras), fast lenses (f2.8 or faster is ideal for night photography)
  • Extra camera batteries

  • A sturdy tripod
  • A remote shutter trigger would be an asset
