Making a Suicide Intervention
Overview
The course is aimed at delegates whose job/volunteer role could bring them into contact with a suicidal person, providing them with the knowledge and skills to provide support to an individual. The course equips participants to intervene and engage a person at risk of suicide so that they are kept as safe as possible until specialist help or emergency services arrive. If you or someone you know requires emotional support, please call Samaritans’ free helpline 116 123.
This course is suitable for staff who work in a suicide-risk location – e.g. multi-storey
car parks, shopping centres, office blocks, bridges or those who work on, or near, roads,
railways and rivers and other waterways. This course would also be highly beneficial
to organisations looking to develop their suicide prevention strategies.
At the end of this course attendees will be able to:
- Identify signs of someone at risk of suicide.
- Think ‘safety first’ throughout an intervention.
- Approach someone and initiate a conversation.
- Engage someone in conversation sensitively and effectively.
- Encourage someone to move to a place of safety – if safe to do so.
- Refer someone to the emergency and/or support services
