Navigating a Writing Project with Mari Mendoza

Writing can feel like moving through a dark forest without a path. Has anyone done this before? When do I know if it's done? Why is this taking so long? Sometimes, that disorientation can be helpful and generative. To make something that has never been made before, we need to get lost, forget what we know, and encounter ourselves in new ways. But also -- we don't have to spend the whole trip like that. The creative process moves though some fairly predictable phases, and once we know what they are, we can be more intentional about how we're making progress, and getting the rest and support we need.

In this interactive talk, we'll explore those phases, all the way from before draft zero, to sharing our work with the world (which doesn’t need to involve publishing unless we want to.) It will allow writers to locate themselves, own their pace, and remember that they're not alone. We're supposed to ask for support and get it. We'll identify where we thrive, and where we need use a little help to keep things moving. This workshop is for anyone who craves more clarity and less chaos on the big journey of any writing project.
