Individuals who have endured adversity or experienced complex trauma often present with a multitude of complicated survival mechanisms (or, trauma responses) which can be difficult for providers to treat effectively. Nationally, 90% of adults in public behavioral health care settings report trauma in their histories (SAMHSA-HRSA, n.d.). These trauma responses are often misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and stigmatized - resulting in us, as therapists, feeling stuck and at a loss.
NMT helps providers “see” these complex behaviors through a neuro-developmental lens that helps us time individually matched interventions in a sequential approach. This method helps to activate underdeveloped or poorly organized regulatory and relational systems.
Traumatic experiences can overwhelm an individual’s neurophysiological system for coping with stress and can have significant impacts on the individual’s physical, mental, and spiritual health (Desmarais et al, 2014).
NMT is built on the premise that trauma and neglect can cause neurological damage and that sequential, neurodevelopmentally appropriate interventions can help improve coping skills and recovery outcomes. Through the NMT assessment tool, therapists can identify what a client’s specific areas of needs are and identify specific interventions to target those areas of functioning.
This workshop will provide a basic overview of the NMT model for adult clients with complex trauma. Participants will obtain a better understanding of the brain, the stress response system, effects of trauma on development and the difference between trauma and neglect to better support their client’s capacity to regulate, cope with stressors, and enhance their recovery.
About NMT: The Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) created by Dr. Bruce Perry is an organizing framework that helps one understand when using interventions may be the most beneficial and appropriate. NMT is not a specific therapeutic technique or set of specific interventions, rather a neuro-developmentally sensitive and trauma-informed approach that guides treatment.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain differences between neglect, chronic trauma and other adverse experiences and the impact on brain development.
2. Describe bottom-up and top-down brain concepts.
3. Identify the 4 NMT domains of functioning.
4. Identify at least 3 ways to increase client self-regulation and sense of safety.
