Nurturing Deep Work: Montessori Insights into Behaviour and Regulation

Nurturing Deep Work: Montessori Insights into Behaviour and Regulation

By AMI (Canada)

Overview

Decode behaviour, sharpen observation & guide children with compassionate strategies designed to support deeper classroom engagement.

Join us for an interactive workshop designed for Montessori educators working with children from birth to adolescence (0 to 6, 6 to 12, and 12 plus). This session invites us to move beyond managing behaviour toward deeply understanding its root causes through observation, developmental insight and relationship centred practice.

Grounded in Montessori pedagogy and informed by the latest in brain development and trauma informed care, the workshop explores how behaviour reflects lagging skills, unmet needs or nervous system dysregulation, not defiance.

Learning Outcomes

Strengthen your ability to interpret behaviour across all planes of development.
Gain insight into how behaviour expresses unmet needs, developmental challenges, and nervous system states, drawing on current scientific research. Strengthen your ability to interpret behaviour within each plane of development so responses are grounded in empathy, not assumption.

Grow your observation toolkit.
Move beyond anecdotal notetaking to systematic, evidence-informed observation. Explore multiple observation tools such as checklists, time sampling, and frequency counts to track behaviour over time, distinguish objective data from interpretation, and use your findings to develop targeted, responsive strategies that support the child’s developmental needs.

Develop more meaningful co-regulation and conflict resolution skills.
Practise offering a calm and grounded presence that supports children in returning to regulation. Explore Montessori aligned approaches to emotional coaching, problem solving and conflict resolution so you can guide children through challenges with clarity and compassion.

Recognize when a child's behaviour needs additional support.

Develop the ability to recognize when a child’s behaviour reflects typical developmental patterns versus when it may signal a need for additional support. Learn how to notice early warning signs, document observations effectively, and understand when it might be appropriate to seek guidance or outside advice.

Educators will leave with practical strategies, enhanced observation skills, and a deeper understanding of behaviour across all developmental stages. You will be equipped to prepare yourself, environments and routines that support children’s regulation, connection, and independence, creating the conditions for them to engage in deeper, more meaningful work.
