Overview

Learn the basics of picture book illustration! Create expressive monster characters inspired by The Mango Monster and design your own story.

Program Description:

Learn one of the fundamentals of illustrating a picture book- character design! After reading The Mango Monster, we will discuss how to give expression and personality to a character by focusing on shape as an art element. You will have a chance to design and create your own monster character and sidekick as a starting point for an original story.

Recommended for Grades K 6

Learning Outcome: Students will explore different ways to draw and how to refine their art through an artist demonstration

Speaker's Bio:

Meneka Repka (she/her) is an illustrator and teacher living in Victoria, British Columbia. She is passionate about children’s art and literature that emphasizes themes of justice and compassion. Meneka loves projects that provide opportunities to draw animals, landscapes, and human interactions with the natural world. She is the current Children’s Illustrator in Residence at Calgary Public Library.
