Discussion and Q&A with the Artists
The Patterns of Influence exhibition by Rachael Ashe is a collection of handcrafted works from paper devised to visually challenge the viewer with intricate details on a grand scale. The exhibition aims to provoke conversation around materials, the use of hands-on methods, and the concept of slow craft. In conjunction with the exhibition, journalist and multidisciplinary artist Carlyn Yandle will engage Rachael Ashe in a discussion around aspects of the show. Part interview, and part conversation between two artists with much in common and a shared passion for making.
Rachael Ashe (Vancouver, BC) is a graduate of the Creative Photography program at Humber College in Ontario and is self-taught in paper-cutting and sculpting. She creates hand-cut artwork and installation from paper inspired by visual patterns found in nature, and influenced by textile design and production.
Carlyn Yandle’s art practice interweaves a childhood steeped in West Coast counter-culture, a range of skills in traditional craft methods and her previous profession as an award-winning newspaper journalist. She finds inspiration through literally playing with ideas, often using culturally-embedded found materials and regularly sharing this creative process through writing. She splits her time between an off-grid studio of her own design on Lasqueti Island, B.C. and her hometown of Vancouver.
