Q+A: CoV Embodied Carbon Modelling Guidelines

Earlier this year the City of Vancouver announced updates to the VBBL that require embodied carbon calculation and reporting for Part 3 buildings, starting July 2023.

The draft guidelines are currently available to review, along with the design report template. We encourage attendees to review these documents prior to the event, and come with any questions they may have. If you wish to provide written feedback on either of these documents, you may do so via this google form. The deadline for feedback is January 20th 2023.

To assist with the reporting process, the City of Vancouver is developing Embodied Carbon Modelling Guidelines including an embodied carbon reporting template. In this Q&A session attendees will have the ppportunity to raise any questions or comments, as well as get a better understand some of the background that went into the development of these guidelines and the reporting requirements.

Speaker Bios

Patrick Enright, PEng. [Senior Green Building Engineer, City of Vancouver]

Patrick Enright is a Senior Green Building Engineer with the City of Vancouver’s Sustainability Group, where he works on green building policy and code updates for large new buildings. Current priorities include the implementation of the Zero Emissions Building Plan, and creating a policy to reduce embodied emissions in the construction sector. Patrick is a professional engineer with years of experience in the building industry, including a number of years with a Vancouver firm in mechanical design and energy modeling. Before moving to Vancouver, Patrick worked in the national project management office of Defence Construction Canada located in Ottawa.

Anthony Pak [Principal at Priopta and CLF Global Hub Director]

Anthony is the Principal at Priopta, a firm with deep expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for buildings. Priopta supports design teams in reducing embodied carbon on construction projects and works with leading organizations and jurisdictions to develop effective embodied carbon policies. Anthony is also the founder of CLF Vancouver—the first local hub of the Carbon Leadership Forum—which organizes local events that empower industry professionals to radically reduce embodied carbon from buildings and infrastructure. Since 2019, CLF Vancouver has inspired over 30 other cities to start CLF local hubs. He now also serves as the CLF Global Hub Director, working to support the growth and impact of CLF hubs around the world.
